Battle of Algiers

A 1956–1957 campaign of urban guerrilla warfare and French counterinsurgency in Algiers during the Algerian War of Independence. It became a defining case of revolutionary violence, military repression, and the political costs of torture.

National Liberation Front (Algeria): The Algerian nationalist organization that led the armed struggle for independence from France. Its urban network organized attacks and mobilized support in Algiers.
Algerian War: The 1954–1962 war between France and Algerian independence movements, chiefly the FLN. The Battle of Algiers was one urban campaign within this wider war.
Yacef Saadi: An FLN commander who led its autonomous zone in Algiers during the Battle of Algiers. He directed much of the FLN's urban organization and armed campaign.
