Battle of Arsuf

A 1191 battle near Arsuf in which Richard I of England’s crusader army defeated Ayyubid forces led by Saladin during the Third Crusade.

Richard I of England: King of England from 1189 to 1199, known for his leadership during the Third Crusade. He commanded the crusader army and directed its march and battlefield response.
Third Crusade: A campaign launched by European rulers to recover Jerusalem after Saladin’s conquest of the city in 1187. Arsuf was a major engagement in Richard’s effort to secure the Levantine coast.
Battle of Montgisard: A 1177 battle in which King Baldwin IV’s crusader army defeated Saladin’s forces near Ramla. Like Arsuf, it was a crusader victory over Saladin, but fought under very different circumstances.
Jaffa: A port city on the eastern Mediterranean coast, south of Acre and west of Jerusalem. Richard’s victory helped protect the route to this strategic port.
Saladin: Ayyubid sultan who united much of the Muslim Near East and fought the crusader states. He led the Ayyubid forces that harried Richard’s column and fought at Arsuf.
Siege of Acre: A 1189–1191 siege in which crusader forces captured the strategically important port of Acre from Saladin’s forces. Acre’s fall freed Richard’s army to march south toward Jaffa.
Battle of Jaffa: A 1192 engagement in which Richard’s forces repelled Saladin’s attempt to retake Jaffa. It continued the coastal campaign after the victory at Arsuf.
Jerusalem: A city sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and the central territorial objective of the Third Crusade. Arsuf improved Richard’s campaign position without bringing the city under crusader control.
Crusader infantry: Foot soldiers who formed the protected core of medieval crusader armies. Infantry held the marching formation together under repeated mounted attacks.
Siege of Jaffa: A 1192 siege in which Richard’s forces retook Jaffa from Saladin’s army. The battle of Arsuf helped secure the approach to this coastal stronghold.
