Battle of Avarayr

A 451 battle in which Armenian forces led by Vardan Mamikonian fought the Sasanian Empire over religious and political control of Armenia. Though the Persians won the field, Armenian resistance helped secure the survival of Armenian Christianity.

Sasanian Empire: A Persian empire that ruled from 224 to 651, centered in Iran and frequently at war with Rome and Byzantium. Its rulers sought to bring Armenia more firmly under Persian political and religious authority.
Vardan Mamikonian: An Armenian military commander and noble who led the Christian forces at Avarayr in 451. He commanded the Armenian army and died in the battle.
Sasanian war elephants: Elephants used by Sasanian armies to disrupt enemy formations and support their cavalry and infantry. Persian elephants contributed to the military pressure faced by Armenian troops.

Movses Khorenatsi: An Armenian historian traditionally dated to the fifth century, known for a history of Armenia from legendary origins onward. His historical tradition helped shape later accounts of Armenia’s past.
