Battle of Bir Hakeim

A 1942 battle in Libya in which Free French forces defended Bir Hakeim against Axis forces during the North African campaign.

Bir Hakeim: A desert crossroads and former Ottoman fort in southeastern Libya, contested during the 1942 North African campaign. Its isolated position made the crossroads a fortified anchor on the southern end of the Gazala Line.
Operation Theseus: The Axis offensive launched in May 1942 against the British Eighth Army’s Gazala Line in Libya. Its advance brought Axis forces into contact with Bir Hakeim.
Marie-Pierre Kœnig: A French general who commanded the Free French garrison at Bir Hakeim in 1942. His leadership coordinated the defense and the eventual withdrawal.
