Battle of Chacabuco

The Battle of Chacabuco was an 1817 victory by the Army of the Andes over royalist forces near Santiago, opening the way for Chilean independence forces to enter the capital.

Army of the Andes: A military force organized by the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata to liberate Chile from Spanish rule. It crossed the Andes and won the battle under José de San Martín.
Chilean War of Independence: The conflict from 1810 to 1826 in which Chilean forces fought to end Spanish colonial rule. Chacabuco was a major turning point in this wider struggle.
Santiago: The capital and largest city of Chile, situated in the central valley beneath the Andes. Patriot forces entered the city after Chacabuco, shifting political control of Chile.
