Battle of Dan-no-ura

A decisive 1185 naval battle in the Genpei War, fought in the Kanmon Strait between the Taira and Minamoto clans. The Minamoto victory ended Taira power and helped establish the Kamakura shogunate.

Kanmon Strait: A narrow waterway separating Honshu and Kyushu in southwestern Japan. The strait’s currents and confined waters formed the battle’s setting.
