Battle of Dara

A 530 battle near the Byzantine fortress of Dara in which Byzantine forces under Belisarius defeated a Sasanian Persian army. Its defensive tactics helped secure a Byzantine victory in the Iberian War.

Belisarius: A Byzantine general who led imperial armies during the wars of Justinian I. He commanded the Byzantine army and organized its defensive position at Dara.
Iberian War: A war between the Byzantine Empire and the Sasanian Empire fought from 526 to 532. Dara was the war’s major Byzantine victory in Mesopotamia.
Battle of Callinicum: A 531 battle in which a Sasanian army defeated Byzantine forces near Callinicum in Syria. This later engagement shows that Dara’s victory did not end the war or ensure Byzantine dominance.
