Battle of Diu

The 1509 naval battle off Diu in which Portugal defeated a coalition of Mamluk, Gujarati, and Calicut forces, securing Portuguese dominance in the western Indian Ocean.

Francisco de Almeida: A Portuguese nobleman who served as the first viceroy of Portuguese India from 1505 to 1509. He commanded the Portuguese fleet and sought revenge for his son’s death in the coalition’s earlier victory at Chaul.
