Battle of Edington

The Battle of Edington was a decisive West Saxon victory over the Viking army led by Guthrum, traditionally dated to 878. It ended Guthrum’s campaign against Alfred the Great and led to a settlement between them.

Alfred the Great: King of Wessex from 871 to 899, Alfred resisted Viking invasions and promoted learning and governance. He commanded the West Saxon forces whose victory at Edington secured his kingdom.
