Battle of Harran

A 1104 battle near Harran in which Seljuk forces defeated the Crusader armies of the County of Edessa and Principality of Antioch. Baldwin II and Joscelin of Courtenay were captured, weakening Edessa.

Feigned retreat: A battlefield tactic in which a force pretends to withdraw to draw opponents into pursuit or an unfavorable position. The Seljuk withdrawal drew part of the Crusader army into a pursuit that exposed it to attack.
Harran: An ancient city in northern Mesopotamia, near the modern Turkey–Syria border. The city’s strategic position made it the campaign’s principal objective.
Tancred, Prince of Galilee: A Norman Crusader who governed Antioch as regent and later ruled the Principality of Galilee. He assumed control in Edessa after Baldwin II and Joscelin were captured.
