Battle of Heraclea

A 280 BC battle in southern Italy in which Pyrrhus of Epirus defeated a Roman army near Heraclea, beginning the Pyrrhic War.

Pyrrhus of Epirus: A Hellenistic king of Epirus who campaigned against Rome and Carthage in the western Mediterranean. His command and use of war elephants helped secure the victory.
Pyrrhic War: A war fought from 280 to 275 BC between Rome and Pyrrhus of Epirus, with Greek allies in southern Italy. Heraclea was the first major battle of this conflict.
Battle of Asculum: A 279 BC battle in which Pyrrhus again defeated a Roman army at great cost. This later clash continued the pattern established at Heraclea.
Dionysius of Halicarnassus: A Greek historian of the first century BC who wrote a history of early Rome. His account is a major surviving narrative source for Heraclea.
War elephant: An elephant trained and equipped for use in warfare, especially in ancient armies. The unfamiliar animals disrupted Roman formations during the battle.
