Battle of Hunayn

A battle fought in the Hejaz in 630, shortly after the conquest of Mecca, in which Muhammad’s forces defeated the Hawazin and Thaqif tribes.

Hawazin: An Arab tribal confederation that fought Muhammad’s forces at Hunayn. Hawazin helped form the opposing coalition and supplied many of its fighters.
Conquest of Mecca: The Muslim capture of Mecca in 630, which ended Quraysh control of the city. Hunayn followed soon after, as neighboring tribes responded to the new balance of power.
Battle of Hunayn in Islamic tradition: The Qur’anic and later Muslim accounts of the battle and its lessons. These accounts emphasize the danger of relying on numerical strength rather than God.
Hunayn Valley: A valley near Mecca traditionally identified as the site of the Battle of Hunayn. Its narrow terrain is central to accounts of the opposing force’s opening attack.
Battle of Badr: A 624 battle in which Muhammad’s smaller force defeated a Quraysh army near Medina. Unlike Hunayn, Badr was fought against Mecca’s Quraysh before the city’s conquest.
Thaqif: An Arab tribe centered on the city of Ta'if. Thaqif joined Hawazin in resisting the Muslim advance.
Quraysh: The Arab tribe that controlled Mecca before its conquest by Muhammad’s forces. Mecca’s surrender altered the alliances and calculations that preceded Hunayn.
Surah At-Tawbah: The ninth chapter of the Qur’an, which includes a passage associated with Hunayn. Qur’an 9:25–27 recalls the battle’s initial setback and eventual divine aid.
Awtas: A location associated with a separate engagement during the Hunayn campaign. Some Hawazin fighters regrouped there after Hunayn, extending the campaign beyond the main battle.
Battle of Uhud: A 625 battle near Medina in which Quraysh forces fought Muhammad’s community. Uhud and Hunayn both involved an early Muslim setback, but ended in different military outcomes.
