Battle of Ipsus

A battle fought in Phrygia around 301 BCE in which Seleucus I and Lysimachus defeated Antigonus I and Demetrius, reshaping the Hellenistic kingdoms.

Seleucus I Nicator: A Macedonian general who founded the Seleucid Empire after Alexander the Great’s death. His elephants and cavalry helped turn the battle against Antigonus.
Diadochi: The rival commanders who fought over Alexander the Great’s empire after his death. Their wars culminated in the coalition victory at Ipsus.

Seleucid Empire: A Hellenistic kingdom founded by Seleucus I, stretching at its height from Asia Minor to regions east of Iran. Seleucus’s share of Antigonid territory greatly enlarged the kingdom after Ipsus.
Partition of Babylon: The 323 BCE settlement distributing satrapies and authority among Alexander’s commanders and heirs. Its unstable allocation of power set the succession conflicts in motion.
Cassander: A Macedonian ruler who controlled Macedonia and Greece during the wars of Alexander’s successors. His alliance with Lysimachus and Seleucus helped contain Antigonus.
Battle of Raphia: A 217 BCE battle in which Ptolemy IV defeated Antiochus III during the Fourth Syrian War. It shows the later rivalry between successor kingdoms formed in the post-Ipsus order.
