Battle of Issus

A 333 BCE battle in which Alexander the Great defeated the Persian king Darius III near Issus in southern Anatolia, opening the route to Phoenicia and Egypt.

Alexander the Great: Macedonian king who built an empire across the Persian domains and into Central Asia. He led the Macedonian army and personally directed its decisive attack.
Battle of the Granicus: A 334 BCE battle in which Alexander defeated Persian forces near the Granicus River in northwestern Anatolia. This earlier victory began Alexander’s conquest of Persian-held Anatolia.
Siege of Tyre: A seven-month Macedonian siege that captured the Phoenician island city of Tyre in 332 BCE. The victory at Issus cleared the way for Alexander to press south along the coast.
Arrian: A Greek author of the second century CE whose Anabasis of Alexander narrates Alexander’s campaigns. His account is one of the principal surviving narratives of Issus.
Darius III: The last Achaemenid king of Persia, ruling from 336 to 330 BCE. His presence with the Persian army made his flight a defining moment of the battle.
Siege of Halicarnassus: A 334 BCE siege in which Alexander captured much of the Persian-aligned city of Halicarnassus. After securing southwestern Anatolia, Alexander advanced east toward Issus.
Siege of Gaza: A Macedonian siege that captured Gaza in 332 BCE during Alexander’s campaign toward Egypt. Gaza was the next major obstacle after Alexander advanced beyond Issus and Tyre.
Diodorus Siculus: A Greek historian of the first century BCE who wrote a universal history in forty books. His narrative supplies a major ancient account of the battle and its aftermath.
Pinarus River: A river in southern Anatolia, usually identified with the modern Payas River. Its banks and narrow coastal plain constrained Persian deployment and shaped the fighting.
Achaemenid Empire: The ancient Persian empire founded by Cyrus the Great and ruled by the Achaemenid dynasty. The battle was a major encounter in Alexander’s invasion of this empire.
