Battle of Karbala

The 680 battle in which Umayyad forces killed Husayn ibn Ali and his small group of supporters. Its commemoration became central to Shia Islam.

First Fitna: The first major civil war in the early Islamic community, fought from 656 to 661. Its unresolved disputes over leadership shaped the political divisions that preceded Karbala.
Husayn ibn Ali: A grandson of Muhammad and son of Ali, revered as the third Imam in Twelver Shia Islam. His refusal to submit to Yazid’s authority brought his small party into confrontation with Umayyad forces.
Ali ibn Abi Talib: Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law, the fourth caliph and a central figure in Shia Islam. As Husayn’s father, Ali links Karbala to earlier disputes over leadership of the Muslim community.
Ashura: The tenth day of Muharram, observed by Muslims with differing religious meanings and practices. It marks the day Husayn was killed and anchors annual mourning for Karbala.
Tawwabun: A movement of Kufans who sought atonement for failing to support Husayn and later fought Umayyad forces. Their uprising shows how guilt over Karbala became political action.
Muawiya I: The first Umayyad caliph, who ruled from 661 until his death in 680. His designation of his son Yazid as successor helped precipitate Husayn’s revolt.
Al-Hurr ibn Yazid al-Riyahi: An Umayyad commander who defected to Husayn’s side shortly before the battle. His change of allegiance illustrates the choices made by soldiers confronting Husayn’s plight.
Zaynab bint Ali: A daughter of Ali and sister of Husayn, remembered for surviving Karbala and speaking against Umayyad rule. Her public account of the aftermath helped preserve the memory of Husayn’s death.
Arba'een: A Shia observance held forty days after Ashura, associated with mourning Husayn ibn Ali. Its annual rituals extend the remembrance of Karbala beyond Ashura.
Mukhtar al-Thaqafi: A revolutionary leader who led a revolt in Kufa and pursued men implicated in Husayn’s death. His revolt turned demands for vengeance for Karbala into a campaign for power.
