Battle of Korsun–Cherkassy

A Soviet offensive in Ukraine from January to February 1944 that encircled German forces in the Korsun salient and ended with a costly breakout attempt.

Korsun Pocket: The German-held salient encircled by Soviet forces during the January–February 1944 battle in Ukraine. This was the trapped formation at the center of the battle.
Nikolai Vatutin: A Soviet general who commanded the 1st Ukrainian Front during World War II. He directed one of the fronts that closed the German salient.
German Army Group South: A German army group that fought against Soviet forces on the southern part of the Eastern Front. The battle damaged its forces and complicated its defense of Ukraine.
