Battle of Kosovo

The Battle of Kosovo was fought in 1389 between Ottoman forces and a coalition led by Serbian Prince Lazar on Kosovo Field. Both rulers, Lazar and Sultan Murad I, died, and the battle became central to Serbian historical memory.

Lazar of Serbia: Lazar Hrebeljanović was a Serbian prince who ruled much of Moravian Serbia and led its forces at Kosovo in 1389. He commanded the Serbian-led coalition and died during the battle.
Ottoman–Serbian Wars: The Ottoman–Serbian Wars were a series of conflicts between Ottoman forces and Serbian states from the fourteenth to fifteenth centuries. Kosovo was a pivotal engagement in this longer contest.
Stefan Lazarević: Stefan Lazarević was a Serbian ruler, military commander, and writer who governed from 1389 to 1427. Lazar’s son became a major ruler after his father’s death at Kosovo.
Miloš Obilić: Miloš Obilić is a legendary Serbian hero credited in later tradition with killing Sultan Murad I at Kosovo. His celebrated deed became the best-known story of the battle’s decisive moment.
Murad I: Murad I was an Ottoman sultan who expanded Ottoman power in the Balkans from 1362 until his death in 1389. He led the Ottoman campaign and was killed at Kosovo.
Battle of Maritsa: The Battle of Maritsa was a 1371 Ottoman victory over Serbian forces near the Maritsa River. Its outcome weakened Serbian powers and opened the way for further Ottoman advances.
Battle of Kosovo (1448): The Battle of Kosovo in 1448 was a conflict between Ottoman forces and a Hungarian-led crusading army. A second battle on the same field is often confused with the 1389 engagement.
Desanka Maksimović: Desanka Maksimović was a Serbian poet whose work often drew on national history and folklore. Her poem “The Kosovo Maiden” reimagines the battle’s human cost.
Vuk Branković: Vuk Branković was a Serbian regional lord whose lands lay in Kosovo and neighboring regions during the fourteenth century. He was a prominent coalition leader who survived the battle.
Serbian Empire: The Serbian Empire was a medieval Balkan state that reached its greatest extent under Stefan Dušan in the mid-fourteenth century. Its fragmentation left competing Serbian rulers facing Ottoman expansion.
