Battle of Mühlberg

A decisive 1547 battle in which Emperor Charles V’s forces defeated the Protestant Schmalkaldic League and captured its leader, John Frederick I of Saxony.

Elbe River: A major Central European river flowing through Bohemia and Germany to the North Sea. Charles V’s troops crossed the Elbe near Mühlberg to surprise the Saxon army.
Capitulation of Wittenberg: The 1547 agreement by which John Frederick I surrendered his electoral title and parts of his lands to Charles V. It formalized the political settlement imposed after Mühlberg.
