Battle of Nahrawan

A 658 battle in which Caliph Ali’s forces defeated Kharijite rebels during the First Fitna. The defeat deepened divisions within the early Muslim community.

Battle of Siffin: A 657 battle between Caliph Ali’s forces and Muawiya’s Syrian army during the First Fitna. Its arbitration agreement prompted Kharijites to break with Ali and form an armed opposition.
Nahrawan Canal: An ancient irrigation canal in Iraq, associated with the region east of the Tigris near Baghdad. The canal and surrounding terrain gave the battle its geographic setting.
Assassination of Ali: The killing of Caliph Ali by the Kharijite Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam in Kufa in 661. A surviving Kharijite later assassinated Ali, turning the battle’s aftermath into a lasting political rupture.
Islamic historiography: The study and writing of history in Muslim societies, including the transmission and evaluation of historical reports. Nahrawan’s narrative depends on later reports whose origins and transmission require scrutiny.
First Fitna: The first major civil war among Muslims, fought from 656 to 661 over leadership of the community. Nahrawan was one episode in the wider conflict that fractured Ali’s caliphate.
Abd Allah ibn Wahb al-Rasibi: An early Kharijite leader who was chosen as commander by the separatists at Harura. He led the rebel force against Ali’s army at Nahrawan.
Muawiya I: The first Umayyad caliph, who ruled from 661 to 680 after opposing Ali during the First Fitna. Ali’s weakened position after Nahrawan helped Muawiya consolidate power.
Al-Tabari: A ninth- and tenth-century Muslim scholar and historian, best known for his universal history and Quran commentary. His chronicle preserves influential accounts of the battle and its surrounding events.
Tahkim: The arbitration between Ali and Muawiya agreed after the Battle of Siffin. Kharijites condemned Ali’s acceptance of human arbitration as a rejection of divine judgment.
Harura: A place near Kufa where opponents of Ali’s arbitration gathered and organized as a distinct group. The Nahrawan rebels emerged from the separatist movement first organized at Harura.
