Battle of Omdurman

The 1898 battle in Sudan in which an Anglo-Egyptian army defeated Mahdist forces near Omdurman, ending the Mahdist state’s control of the region.

Maxim gun: A recoil-operated machine gun that uses barrel movement to cycle ammunition and fire continuously. Maxim guns delivered sustained fire against Mahdist infantry advancing across open ground.
Mahdist War: A conflict in Sudan from 1881 to 1899 between the Mahdist movement and forces seeking to restore Egyptian rule. Omdurman was the decisive late-stage battle in this longer war.
