Battle of Pavón

The 1861 battle between forces of the Argentine Confederation and Buenos Aires ended with Confederation leader Justo José de Urquiza withdrawing, clearing the way for Buenos Aires to dominate a reunified Argentina.

Argentine Confederation: A federation of Argentine provinces established in 1831 and reorganized under the 1853 Constitution, initially excluding Buenos Aires. Its forces fought at Pavón to preserve provincial authority against Buenos Aires.
