Battle of Roncevaux Pass

A Basque ambush of Charlemagne’s rearguard in the Pyrenees in 778, during its return from a campaign in Iberia. The defeat later inspired the medieval epic The Song of Roland.

Charlemagne’s Spanish campaign: Charlemagne’s 778 expedition into Iberia, undertaken amid political conflict in the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba. The rearguard was attacked while the Frankish army withdrew from this expedition.
