Battle of Sardarabad

The Battle of Sardarabad was fought from 21 to 29 May 1918, when Armenian forces defeated an Ottoman offensive near Sardarabad. Alongside battles at Bash Abaran and Karakilisa, it helped preserve an Armenian state in the Caucasus.

Armenian National Council: A political body formed in Tiflis in 1917 to represent Armenians in the Russian Empire. Its leadership helped organize Armenian resistance as Russian authority collapsed.
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk: The 1918 treaty by which Soviet Russia left the First World War and ceded territory to the Central Powers. Its territorial terms enabled Ottoman forces to renew their advance in the Caucasus.
First Republic of Armenia: An independent Armenian state that existed from 1918 to 1920. The victory helped make its declaration of independence on 28 May 1918 possible.
Sardarabad: A settlement in Armenia’s Armavir Province, near the site of the 1918 battle. The town gave the battle its name and anchored the defense of the Ararat plain.
Armenian Fedayi: Armenian irregular fighters who organized armed resistance in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Veteran volunteers brought experience and local networks to the defense.
Russian Revolution: The revolutions of 1917 that ended the Russian monarchy and brought the Bolsheviks to power. The collapse of Russian authority left the Caucasus exposed to Ottoman military pressure.
Battle of Karakilisa: A May 1918 battle in which Armenian forces resisted Ottoman troops near Karakilisa, now Vanadzor. Together with Sardarabad and Bash Abaran, it helped halt the Ottoman campaign.
Yerevan: The capital and largest city of Armenia, located in the Ararat plain. The Ottoman advance threatened Yerevan, making the nearby battle strategically urgent.
Tovmas Nazarbekian: An Armenian general who commanded the Armenian forces in the Caucasus during the First World War. His command structure linked local defense efforts across the threatened region.
Caucasus Campaign: The First World War campaign fought between Russian and Ottoman forces across the Caucasus and eastern Anatolia. Sardarabad formed part of the campaign’s final struggle after Russia’s withdrawal.
