Battle of Shiroyama

The Battle of Shiroyama was fought in Kagoshima on September 24, 1877, ending the Satsuma Rebellion with the defeat of Saigō Takamori’s samurai army by imperial forces.

Satsuma Rebellion: An 1877 uprising in southwestern Japan against the newly established Meiji government, led by former samurai from Satsuma. Shiroyama was the rebellion’s last battle and ended its organized resistance.
Meiji Restoration: The 1868 political transformation that ended the Tokugawa shogunate and restored imperial rule in Japan. The new order it created displaced the samurai class and prompted unrest.
Yamagata Aritomo: A Japanese statesman and military leader who helped build the modern imperial army. He directed the government campaign that cornered the rebels at Shiroyama.

Abolition of the samurai class: The Meiji-era removal of the samurai’s hereditary legal status and privileges. The loss of status and stipends helped fuel opposition among former warriors.
