Battle of Tannenberg

A major German victory over Russian forces in East Prussia in August 1914, during the opening weeks of World War I.

Battle of Gumbinnen: An August 1914 battle in East Prussia in which Russian forces defeated the German Eighth Army. The Russian advance after this engagement helped prompt Germany’s decision to concentrate against Samsonov’s army.
