Battle of the Aegates

A naval battle fought near the Aegadian Islands in 241 BCE, where Rome defeated Carthage and secured the outcome of the First Punic War.

Quinquereme: An ancient warship traditionally described as having five ranks or groups of rowers contributing to each oar. Both fleets relied on large oared warships, whose crews and maneuverability shaped the battle.
First Punic War: A war between Rome and Carthage from 264 to 241 BCE, fought chiefly over Sicily and control of the western Mediterranean. Its prolonged struggle over Sicily created the strategic crisis that led to the final campaign.

Hamilcar Barca: A Carthaginian general who led operations in Sicily during the later years of the First Punic War. His resistance in Sicily continued even as the fleets prepared for the war’s final decision.
