Battle of the Catalaunian Plains

A battle fought in Roman Gaul in 451 between Attila’s Huns and their allies and a coalition led by Flavius Aetius and Theodoric I.

Flavius Aetius: A Roman general who held major military and political influence in the Western Roman Empire during the fifth century. He assembled and commanded the Roman-led coalition against Attila.
Western Roman Empire: The western division of the Roman Empire, which endured as a distinct imperial government until 476. Its weakening authority shaped the coalition’s dependence on allied peoples.
Jordanes: A sixth-century Roman historian whose Getica recounts the history of the Goths and Attila’s defeat in Gaul. His account is a major surviving narrative source, written about a century after the battle.

Attila: King of the Huns from about 434 until his death in 453. His campaign into Gaul brought the opposing coalition together.
Honoria: A sister of Western Roman emperor Valentinian III whose actions became entangled in Attila’s claims against the empire. Attila invoked his connection to Honoria amid the tensions preceding his invasion of Gaul.
