Battle of the Caucasus

The Battle of the Caucasus was a World War II campaign on the Eastern Front, fought from 1942 to 1943, in which Axis forces advanced toward the region’s oil fields before Soviet counteroffensives drove them back.

Case Blue: The German summer 1942 offensive in southern Russia aimed at the Caucasus and the Volga. Its southern thrust opened the Axis campaign toward the Caucasus.
Operation Barbarossa: The German invasion of the Soviet Union launched on 22 June 1941. Its failure to defeat the Soviet Union quickly set the conditions for the 1942 southern offensive.
Wilhelm List: A German field marshal who commanded Army Group A during its 1942 advance into the Caucasus. He directed the main German formation sent to seize the region.
Maikop oil fields: Oil fields in the western Caucasus that German forces captured in 1942 but could not restore to significant production. Their capture failed to deliver the fuel Germany expected from the campaign.
