Battle of the Eastern Solomons

A carrier battle fought on August 24–25, 1942, in which U.S. forces disrupted a Japanese effort to reinforce Guadalcanal and damaged the carrier Ryūjō.

Aircraft carrier: A warship that carries, launches, and recovers aircraft at sea. Both fleets relied on carrier-borne aircraft to find and attack the opposing forces.
Guadalcanal campaign: A campaign fought from August 1942 to February 1943 to capture and defend Guadalcanal. The Eastern Solomons battle was an early naval contest within this campaign.
