Battle of the Falkland Islands

A naval battle fought off the Falkland Islands on 8 December 1914, in which British forces destroyed a German squadron during World War I.

Battle of Coronel: A German naval victory over a British squadron off Chile on 1 November 1914. The defeat at Coronel prompted Britain to send a stronger force that met the German squadron here.
German East Asia Squadron: The German Imperial Navy’s East Asian naval formation, commanded by Maximilian von Spee in 1914. Its movement from the Pacific toward the Atlantic led to the Falklands encounter.
Doveton Sturdee: A British admiral who commanded the force that defeated Spee’s squadron at the Falklands. He organized the British pursuit and directed the engagement.
Battle of the Dogger Bank: A naval engagement in the North Sea on 24 January 1915 between British and German forces. It shows how German surface raiding continued in European waters after Spee’s squadron was destroyed.
HMS Invincible: A British battlecruiser launched in 1907 and a flagship in the Falklands battle. Its speed and heavy guns helped Britain catch and destroy the German cruisers.

HMS Inflexible: A British battlecruiser commissioned in 1908 and deployed to the South Atlantic in 1914. It joined Invincible in the long-range pursuit of the German ships.
Battle of Heligoland Bight: A naval engagement in the North Sea on 28 August 1914, the first major naval battle of World War I. It formed part of the wider naval war that shaped Britain’s deployment of forces overseas.
