Battle of the Frigidus

A battle fought in 394 near the Frigidus River, where Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius I defeated the forces of Western Roman usurper Eugenius.

Theodosius I: Roman emperor from 379 to 395 who reunited the empire under his rule. He commanded the eastern forces that defeated Eugenius.
Death of Valentinian II: The death in 392 of the young western Roman emperor, found hanged at Vienne. His death created the succession crisis that Eugenius exploited.
Ambrose of Milan: Bishop of Milan from 374 to 397 and an influential Christian leader in the late Roman Empire. His letters and sermons reveal the religious framing of Theodosius’s victory.
