Battle of the Masts

A naval battle fought off the coast of Lycia in 655, in which an Arab fleet defeated the Byzantine navy during the early Muslim conquests.

Early Muslim conquests: The seventh- and eighth-century expansion of Muslim rule beyond Arabia across the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Europe. Arab forces had expanded to the Mediterranean coast, bringing the Byzantine Empire into direct naval conflict.
Byzantine navy: The maritime forces maintained by the Byzantine Empire for defense, transport, and warfare. Its defeat in the battle exposed the vulnerability of imperial sea power.
Byzantine–Arab wars: A series of military conflicts between the Byzantine Empire and Muslim states from the seventh century onward. The battle was an early naval episode in their wider struggle.

Naval warfare: Combat conducted by armed forces at sea or on other bodies of water. The battle’s reported ship-to-ship fighting reflects the tactics of early medieval naval combat.
