Battle of the North Cape

A naval battle fought off Norway on 26 December 1943, in which British forces sank the German battleship Scharnhorst.

Scharnhorst: A German battleship that served in World War II and was sunk at the Battle of the North Cape. Its attempt to attack an Allied convoy brought it into the British fleet’s trap.
Convoy JW 55B: An Allied convoy that sailed from Britain toward the Soviet Union in December 1943. Scharnhorst’s attack on this convoy prompted the British interception.
Bruce Fraser: A British admiral who commanded the Home Fleet from 1943 to 1945. He planned the operation that positioned British forces to intercept Scharnhorst.
Allied Arctic convoys: Convoys that carried Allied supplies to the Soviet Union through northern waters during World War II. The protected convoy reached the Soviet Union after Scharnhorst’s destruction.

German battleship Tirpitz: A German battleship that remained based in Norway after Scharnhorst was sunk. Tirpitz became the principal surviving German battleship threat in Norwegian waters.
HMS Belfast: A Town-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy that served in World War II. It helped shadow Scharnhorst and directed British forces toward the German ship.
German occupation of Norway: Germany’s military occupation of Norway from 1940 until its surrender in 1945. German bases in Norway enabled sorties against Allied shipping in the Arctic.
