Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands

A carrier battle fought on 26 October 1942 during the Guadalcanal campaign. Japan won tactically by damaging U.S. carriers, but lost many aircraft and experienced aircrew, weakening its ability to sustain later operations.

Aircraft carrier: A warship that carries, launches, and recovers military aircraft at sea. Both sides relied on carriers to send strike aircraft against enemy fleets.
Guadalcanal campaign: A 1942–1943 campaign in which Allied forces fought to capture and hold Guadalcanal. Santa Cruz was fought to influence the struggle for Guadalcanal.
William Halsey: A U.S. Navy admiral who commanded Allied forces in the South Pacific during much of the Guadalcanal campaign. Halsey directed U.S. forces in the South Pacific during the battle.
USS Hornet (CV-8): A U.S. aircraft carrier commissioned in 1941 and sunk after the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. Repeated attacks left Hornet disabled; U.S. forces scuttled it after attempts to tow it failed.
Battle of the Coral Sea: A May 1942 carrier battle that halted a Japanese seaborne invasion of Port Moresby. Like Santa Cruz, it involved carrier forces that fought without the fleets directly sighting each other.
Carrier strike: An attack in which carrier-based aircraft strike ships or land targets. The opposing fleets exchanged aircraft raids rather than engaging with gunfire.
Battle of the Eastern Solomons: An August 1942 carrier battle in the Solomon Islands campaign. It was an earlier carrier clash in the same campaign and weakened Japanese air strength.
Thomas Kinkaid: A U.S. Navy admiral who commanded carrier forces at Santa Cruz. Kinkaid commanded the U.S. carrier task force engaged in the battle.
USS Enterprise (CV-6): A U.S. aircraft carrier that fought in the Pacific War from 1941 to 1945. Enterprise survived severe damage and remained the only operational U.S. carrier in the Pacific for a period.
Battle of the Philippine Sea: A June 1944 carrier battle in which U.S. forces inflicted severe losses on Japanese naval aviation. It offers a later contrast in the balance of carrier air power and pilot experience.
