Battle of Yamen

A naval battle fought in 1279 at Yamen, where Yuan forces defeated the Southern Song and ended the Song dynasty’s rule in China.

Yamen: A coastal inlet in Guangdong, China, where the Song fleet made its final stand against Yuan forces. Its narrow waters shaped the battle’s blockade and restricted the Song fleet’s movements.
Mongol conquest of China: The campaigns through which Mongol rulers brought China under their control in the thirteenth century. The campaigns created the Yuan state that pressed the Southern Song toward its final defeat.
Zhao Bing: The last Southern Song emperor, who died during the defeat at Yamen in 1279. His death aboard the fleeing court marked the dynasty’s final end.
Yuan dynasty: The Mongol-led dynasty that ruled China from 1271 to 1368. Victory at Yamen enabled Yuan rule to extend over all of China.
Zhang Hongfan: A Yuan general who commanded the forces attacking the Southern Song at Yamen. His naval tactics and blockade helped bring the Song fleet to defeat.
Southern Song dynasty: The Chinese dynasty that ruled south of the Huai River from 1127 until its conquest by the Mongols in 1279. Its surviving court and forces fought the final campaign that culminated at Yamen.
Lu Xiufu: A Southern Song official who served the child emperor Zhao Bing during the dynasty’s final years. He remained with the emperor at Yamen and died with him as the Song fleet collapsed.
Mongol Empire: The empire founded by Genghis Khan that became the largest contiguous land empire in history. The Yuan victory completed the empire’s conquest of the Song heartland under Kublai Khan.
Zhang Shijie: A Southern Song general who led resistance against the Yuan after the fall of the capital. He organized the Song fleet’s defense at Yamen and escaped the battle before dying at sea.
Battle of Xiangyang: A prolonged Mongol siege of the Song cities Xiangyang and Fancheng, ending in their surrender in 1273. The loss opened a key route for the Yuan advance into Southern Song territory.
