Battle of Zama

The 202 BCE battle in which Scipio Africanus’s Roman army defeated Hannibal’s Carthaginian forces, ending the Second Punic War and establishing Roman dominance in the western Mediterranean.

Hannibal: Carthaginian general who led the invasion of Italy during the Second Punic War. At Zama, his elephants failed to break Scipio’s lines, and his army was defeated.
Second Punic War: A war between Rome and Carthage fought from 218 to 201 BCE across the western Mediterranean. Zama was its final decisive battle and led to Carthage’s surrender.
Treaty of Zama: The peace settlement imposed on Carthage after its defeat in the Second Punic War. Its terms restricted Carthage’s military and diplomatic independence.
Battle of Zama elephants: The elephant charge at Zama, in which many Carthaginian war elephants passed through gaps in Roman ranks. This episode illustrates Scipio’s preparation for Hannibal’s most distinctive weapon.
