Battles of Rzhev

A series of major Soviet-German battles around Rzhev in western Russia from 1942 to 1943. The fighting centered on a German salient threatening Moscow and involved immense casualties.

Rzhev salient: A German-held bulge in the Eastern Front around Rzhev, projecting toward Soviet lines near Moscow. Its position made Rzhev a persistent Soviet target and tied the battles to the defense of Moscow.
