Battles of the Isonzo

A series of twelve battles fought between Italy and Austria-Hungary along the Isonzo River from 1915 to 1917. The campaigns repeatedly failed to break the front until the Central Powers’ victory at Caporetto.

Isonzo River: A river flowing through Slovenia and northeastern Italy to the Adriatic Sea. Its valley and crossings formed the central corridor of the Italian-Austro-Hungarian front.
Treaty of London (1915): A secret 1915 agreement in which Britain, France, and Russia promised territorial gains to secure Italy’s entry into the war. Its promises helped bring Italy into the conflict against Austria-Hungary.
Luigi Cadorna: An Italian general who served as chief of staff from 1914 to 1917. He directed Italy’s repeated offensives on the Isonzo and was dismissed after Caporetto.
Battle of Caporetto: A Central Powers offensive in October and November 1917 that forced the Italian Army into a major retreat. The Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo broke the front and ended the series of river campaigns.
Battle of Vittorio Veneto: An Italian-led offensive in October and November 1918 that defeated Austro-Hungarian forces and hastened the empire’s collapse. Italy’s final victory came one year after the Isonzo front’s collapse at Caporetto.
Karst Plateau: A limestone plateau extending across parts of southwestern Slovenia and northeastern Italy. Its bare, rocky terrain made movement and shelter difficult during battles on the southern front.
Italian entry into World War I: Italy’s decision to declare war on Austria-Hungary in May 1915, joining the Entente in World War I. The declaration opened the Isonzo front and made the battles possible.
Svetozar Borojević: An Austro-Hungarian field marshal known for commanding forces on the Isonzo front. His defense of the river line helped Austria-Hungary withstand the Italian offensives.
Battle of the Bainsizza: An August–September 1917 battle in which Italian forces captured much of the Bainsizza Plateau. The Eleventh Battle brought Italy its largest territorial gains on the Isonzo, without breaking the enemy line.
Italian Army reorganization after Caporetto: The changes to Italian command, discipline, and defensive posture following the 1917 retreat from Caporetto. The losses prompted Cadorna’s removal and a more resilient defense under Armando Diaz.
