Bay of Fundy

The Bay of Fundy is an Atlantic inlet between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada. Its unusually large tides are among the highest recorded worldwide.

Tides: The periodic rise and fall of sea level, driven mainly by the Moon’s and Sun’s gravity and Earth’s rotation. The bay’s defining water-level changes are an unusually large expression of tidal motion.
Hopewell Rocks: A group of sea stacks on New Brunswick’s Fundy coast, shaped by erosion in tidal sandstone. At low tide, visitors can walk on the seabed beneath formations surrounded by water at high tide.
Fundy Basin: A sedimentary basin in Atlantic Canada formed during the breakup of Pangaea. The bay occupies a rift basin whose geological structure helped define its long, narrow form.

Minas Basin: The northeastern arm of the Bay of Fundy, extending into Nova Scotia. Its constricted geometry and extensive intertidal shores display especially large tidal changes.
Atlantic rifting: The stretching and fracturing of continental crust that accompanied the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. Rifting created the basin underlying the Bay of Fundy region.
Bay of Fundy fisheries: Commercial and subsistence fisheries operating in the Bay of Fundy and its connected waters. Tidal mixing and productive coastal habitats underpin fisheries important to nearby communities.
