Bay'ah

Bay'ah is an oath of allegiance offered to a Muslim ruler or leader. It expresses a commitment to obedience and can mark recognition of political authority.

Pledge of Allegiance: A formal promise of loyalty to a person, institution, or state. Bay'ah likewise makes loyalty explicit, though its authority is framed in Islamic political traditions.
Muhammad: The central prophet of Islam, whose preaching began in seventh-century Arabia. Early accounts of pledges to Muhammad shaped later understandings of bay'ah.
Sunni Islam: The largest branch of Islam, whose traditions recognize the first four caliphs as rightful successors to Muhammad. Sunni political thought often treats bay'ah as a means of recognizing legitimate leadership.
Saudi Arabia: A kingdom on the Arabian Peninsula ruled by the House of Saud. The Saudi succession process includes a formal pledge of allegiance to the king.
Shura: Consultation in Islamic governance and communal decision-making. Consultation may precede a bay'ah, linking deliberation with the recognition of leadership.
Aqaba Pledges: Two pledges made by people from Yathrib to Muhammad before the migration to Medina. These pledges are early precedents for allegiance to Muhammad and collective commitment.
Shia Islam: The branch of Islam that holds Ali and his descendants to be Muhammad's rightful successors. Its doctrine of the imamate grounds authority differently from allegiance to a ruler alone.
Allegiance Council: A Saudi body established to help determine succession to the throne. It institutionalizes parts of the allegiance process in Saudi succession.
Caliphate: A form of Islamic polity led by a caliph, understood as a successor to Muhammad's political leadership. Bay'ah has historically been used to recognize a caliph's authority.
Hijra: Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, marking the start of the Islamic calendar. The pledges connected to the migration helped establish a community under Muhammad's leadership.
