BBC World Service
The BBC’s international broadcasting service provides news and other programming worldwide through radio, television, and digital platforms.
Shortwave radio: Radio transmission using high-frequency waves that can travel beyond the horizon through reflection from the ionosphere. Shortwave helped the World Service reach distant audiences without local transmitters.
BBC Empire Service: The BBC’s overseas radio service, launched in 1932 for listeners across the British Empire. The World Service developed from this earlier international broadcasting operation.
John Reith: The BBC’s first director-general, who led the corporation from 1927 to 1938. Reith’s leadership oversaw the creation of the BBC’s overseas broadcasting service.
BBC Radio 4: The BBC’s UK radio network for news, current affairs, drama, and cultural programming. Radio 4 serves a domestic audience, unlike the World Service’s international remit.
BBC World Service English: The World Service’s English-language output, including news and other programming for international audiences. It is the service’s principal language operation and a major source of its global news coverage.
George V Christmas broadcast: The 1932 radio address by King George V, broadcast by the BBC to audiences across the British Empire. It marked the launch of the BBC’s Empire Service, the World Service’s predecessor.
George Orwell: The English novelist and essayist who worked for the BBC’s Eastern Service during the Second World War. His wartime broadcasting work connects the service to debates about propaganda and truth.
BBC News: The BBC’s news division, producing journalism for television, radio, and digital platforms. BBC News and the World Service share reporting resources but have distinct service identities and audiences.
BBC World Service language services: The World Service’s programming and news operations produced in languages other than English. Language-specific broadcasts let the service address audiences in their own languages.
