BCS theory

BCS theory explains conventional superconductivity as a collective quantum state formed when electrons pair through an effective attraction, usually mediated by lattice vibrations.

Cooper pairing: The formation of paired electrons with correlated momenta and spin in a superconductor. The paired state is the microscopic starting point of BCS superconductivity.
Fermi sea: The filled set of electron states up to the Fermi energy in a system of fermions at low temperature. BCS pairing modifies states near this filled-electron reference state.
John Bardeen: American physicist who co-developed the theory of conventional superconductivity and shared two Nobel Prizes in Physics. Bardeen helped formulate the theory and connect it to electron–phonon physics.
Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer transition temperature: The temperature below which a material develops the paired superconducting state described by BCS theory. The theory relates this threshold to pairing strength and the phonon spectrum.
Bose–Einstein condensation: A phase transition in which bosons macroscopically occupy a shared quantum state. BCS pairs are overlapping fermion composites, unlike tightly bound bosons in the dilute limit.
Cooper instability: The result that an arbitrarily weak attractive interaction destabilizes a Fermi sea at sufficiently low temperature. It explains why even weak attraction can initiate pairing in BCS theory.
Fermi surface: The boundary in momentum space between occupied and unoccupied electron states at zero temperature. The pairing instability acts most strongly on electrons near this boundary.
Leon Cooper: American physicist whose analysis showed that weak attraction destabilizes a Fermi sea toward pairing. His result supplied the key pairing insight that preceded the full theory.
Isotope effect: The dependence of a material's superconducting transition temperature on the isotopic mass of its atoms. Its observed mass dependence supported a lattice-vibration role in conventional superconductivity.
Bose–Einstein condensation–BCS crossover: The continuous evolution from overlapping Cooper pairs to tightly bound bosonic pairs as attraction increases. It places weak-coupling BCS pairing within a broader pairing regime.
