Beam dynamics (accelerator physics)

Beam dynamics studies how particle beams move and evolve under electromagnetic forces, accelerator components, and interactions among particles in the beam.

Lorentz force: The force on a charged particle moving through electric and magnetic fields. It governs how accelerator fields bend and accelerate individual beam particles.
Phase space: A space whose coordinates represent the positions and momenta of a system’s states. Beam distributions are tracked in phase space rather than by position alone.
Lattice (accelerator physics): The sequence of magnets and other elements that defines an accelerator’s focusing and bending structure. Its arrangement determines the transport and stability of the beam.
Linear optics: An approximation in which particle motion is governed by linear forces and transport maps. It captures ideal small-amplitude motion, unlike nonlinear dynamics at large amplitudes.
Hill's equation: A linear differential equation describing transverse particle motion in a periodic focusing system. It models oscillations of particles around the reference orbit in a repeating accelerator lattice.
Emittance: A measure of the area occupied by a particle beam in a position–momentum phase-space plane. It quantifies beam spread and helps distinguish focusing from genuine beam-quality changes.
Beam optics: The design and analysis of particle-beam transport using focusing and bending elements. Beam dynamics supplies the motion models used to calculate and tune beam optics.
Nonlinear dynamics: The study of systems whose evolution is governed by equations nonlinear in their state variables. Nonlinear fields create amplitude-dependent tunes, resonances, and chaotic beam motion.
Synchrotron radiation: Electromagnetic radiation emitted by charged particles accelerated along curved paths. Radiation drains energy and can damp or excite oscillations in electron beams.
Betatron oscillation: The transverse oscillation of a particle about the reference orbit in a circular accelerator. Its tune and amplitude are central descriptors of transverse beam motion.
