Bede

Bede was an English monk and scholar of the early eighth century. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People is a foundational source for the history of early England and the English Church.

Monkwearmouth–Jarrow Abbey: A paired Northumbrian monastery where Bede lived and worked, founded by Benedict Biscop in the late seventh century. Its libraries and scholarly community shaped Bede’s education and supplied sources for his history.
Ecclesiastical History of the English People: Bede’s Latin history, completed in 731, traces Christianity and political change in Britain from Roman times to his own day. This is the work that made Bede a central source for early English history.

Aldhelm: A seventh-century English churchman and scholar who wrote Latin prose and poetry. Bede’s history preserves information about Aldhelm and the early English learned tradition.
Anglo-Saxon studies: The study of the language, literature, history, and material culture of Anglo-Saxon England. Bede’s works remain central evidence for the period and its Christian institutions.
