Bedřich Smetana

Bedřich Smetana was a Czech Romantic composer whose operas and orchestral works helped establish a Czech national musical tradition. His best-known works include The Bartered Bride and the symphonic cycle Má vlast.

The Bartered Bride: A comic opera by Bedřich Smetana, set in a Bohemian village and first performed in 1866. Its folk-inflected dances and Czech-language libretto made it his most popular opera.
Czech National Revival: A nineteenth-century movement to strengthen Czech language, culture, and political identity. Smetana’s operas and public work gave musical form to this movement’s cultural ambitions.
