Béla IV of Hungary

Béla IV was king of Hungary and Croatia from 1235 to 1270. After the Mongol invasion of 1241–1242, he promoted fortifications and settlement to rebuild his kingdom.

Mongol invasion of Europe: The Mongol military campaigns into Europe in the 13th century, including the invasion of Hungary in 1241–1242. Its devastation prompted Béla’s program of rebuilding and fortified defense.
Andrew II of Hungary: King of Hungary and Croatia from 1205 to 1235 and father of Béla IV. His extensive grants of royal land left Béla seeking to restore royal authority.
Maria Laskarina: A Byzantine-born queen of Hungary and wife of Béla IV. She shared Béla’s flight during the invasion and helped sustain the royal family in exile.

Kingdom of Croatia: A medieval polity whose rulers also held the crown of Hungary from 1102 onward. Béla ruled Croatia as well as Hungary, extending his responsibilities to the Adriatic frontier.
Stone castle: A fortified residence or stronghold built chiefly from masonry. Béla encouraged castle construction after the Mongols demonstrated the limits of earlier defenses.
Duchy of Transylvania: A medieval Hungarian frontier province governed by a voivode and centered on Transylvania. Before becoming king, Béla governed Transylvania and confronted the kingdom’s eastern frontier.
