Belching

Belching is the expulsion of gas from the stomach through the mouth, often producing a sound. It commonly releases swallowed air and can also accompany digestive processes.

Gastric belch: A belch that releases gas from the stomach through the esophagus and mouth. This is the form defined by stomach gas returning through the mouth.
Aerophagia: Excessive swallowing of air, which can cause abdominal gas, bloating, and belching. Swallowed air is a frequent source of gas released by ordinary belching.
Belching disorder: A disorder characterized by bothersome, excessive belching that causes distress or interferes with daily life. It names the clinical problem when belching is persistent and disruptive.
Flatulence: The passage of gas from the digestive tract through the anus. It is another route for digestive gas to leave the body.
Supragastric belching: A pattern in which air enters the esophagus and is expelled before reaching the stomach. It can sound like a belch but does not release gas from the stomach.
Carbonated drink: A beverage containing dissolved carbon dioxide that forms bubbles when pressure falls. Its dissolved gas can increase stomach gas and prompt belching.
Impedance-pH monitoring: A test that measures reflux, acidity, and movement of liquid or gas through the esophagus. It can help distinguish stomach-origin belches from supragastric air movement.
Bloating: A sensation of abdominal fullness or pressure, sometimes accompanied by visible distension. Belching can relieve upper abdominal pressure, though the sensations are distinct.
Esophagus: The muscular tube that carries food and liquid from the throat to the stomach. Belched gas passes upward through this passage.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease: A chronic condition in which reflux of stomach contents causes troublesome symptoms or complications. Frequent belching may occur alongside its characteristic reflux symptoms.
