Congo Free State : A Central African territory ruled personally by Leopold II from 1885 to 1908 before Belgium annexed it. It was the empire’s first and most consequential territory, established before direct Belgian state rule.
Concessionary companies : Private firms granted territorial privileges to exploit resources and exercise delegated authority. In the Congo, such companies helped turn state claims into extractive control over land and labor.
Atrocities in the Congo Free State : Widespread violence, hostage-taking, mutilation, and deaths associated with Leopold II’s rule in the Congo. These abuses exposed the coercive foundations of the empire’s earliest phase.
