Belgian Revolution

The 1830 uprising in the Southern Netherlands that ended rule by the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and led to Belgium’s independence.

United Kingdom of the Netherlands: A kingdom created in 1815 that united the northern and southern Netherlands under the House of Orange. Its contested union supplied the state against which the southern provinces revolted.
Opera La Muette de Portici: An 1828 opera by Daniel Auber about a Neapolitan revolt against Spanish rule. A performance in Brussels on 25 August 1830 helped spark street demonstrations.
Charles Rogier: A Belgian liberal politician who helped lead the 1830 uprising and later served as prime minister. He organized volunteers and became a leading figure in the revolutionary government.
London Conference of 1830–1831: A diplomatic conference of the great powers that addressed Belgium’s separation from the Netherlands. It negotiated the terms under which Belgium could become an internationally recognized state.
Congress of Vienna: The 1814–1815 diplomatic settlement that reorganized Europe after Napoleon’s defeat. It joined the Southern Netherlands to the north as a barrier against France.
Brussels uprising of 1830: The August–September 1830 revolt in Brussels that became the central armed phase of the Belgian Revolution. Its barricades and fighting transformed protest into an insurrection.
Louis de Potter: A Belgian journalist and republican politician who opposed William I’s government. His speeches and political organizing helped articulate opposition before the revolt.
Treaty of the Eighteen Articles: The 1831 settlement proposed by the London Conference to define Belgium’s separation and borders. It offered Belgium favorable terms that William I initially rejected.
William I of the Netherlands: King of the Netherlands from 1815 to 1840, including the United Kingdom of the Netherlands until 1830. His policies and centralized rule became focal points of southern opposition.
Belgian Provisional Government: The revolutionary government proclaimed in Brussels in September 1830 to lead the break with Dutch rule. It declared independence and organized a new Belgian state.
