Belisario Betancur

Belisario Betancur was a Colombian politician and writer who served as president from 1982 to 1986. His government pursued peace negotiations with armed groups and faced the 1985 Palace of Justice siege.

Palace of Justice siege: A 1985 seizure of Colombia’s Palace of Justice by M-19, followed by a military retaking that left more than 100 dead. The siege and retaking became the gravest crisis of Betancur’s presidency.
